Auditions

Thinking of auditioning?

We would LOVE to see you at auditions!

This year, due to COVID-19, our preliminary auditions will be held through video submissions! Please fill out the following google doc before midnight on  Wednesday September 9th!
  • Harmonettes Audition Google Doc!
  • Email us at harmonettes@umich.edu with ANY questions

We are ESPECIALLY looking for vocal percussionists/beat boxers!! If this is something you enjoy doing or if you would like to learn, please send us an audition video! If you already beat box and would like to show us as part of your audition, show us what you've got! If this is not you, don't worry! You will not be expected to try or learn to beat box.

Here is how auditions work...

  • For the preliminary video submission:
    • Solo - This is the part of the audition that YOU pick! Choose any song you'd like, any style, and sing us a verse and chorus (usually ~1min). Choose a song that fits your voice, and shows off your range AND personality! This is your chance to show us everything you've got!!
  • If you receive a callback:
    • Vocal range - We'll start by having you sing an ascending and descending scale to test your vocal range. You can sing this on any syllable you'd like.
    • Tonal memory - We'll play a series of notes, and we'll have you sing them back to us. We will play this for you up to three times, and then we'll have you sing it on your own.
    • Sight reading - We'll give you a sheet of music (about 4 measures) and, after giving you the starting note and giving you some time to look over it, see how well you can sight read. If you don't think you know how to sight read, please still audition. Having any bit of sense for pitch and rhythm will be helpful in learning music in our group, and we just use this part of the ability to see what sort of musical training you've already had (and some of us in the group had absolutely none at the time of auditioning). Don't stress :)

Check out our "Music" page for the type of music we usually sing!

We try to make our audition process as painless as possible. We know that nerves can get to you, so we always take that into consideration. When you come into your audition, the best possible way to get us to remember you from the other auditionees is to simply BE YOURSELF! We can't express this enough! You'll only get a short amount of time to show us what you've got, so relax and show us who you are!
